How is heart failure diagnosed?

If you are experiencing heart failure symptoms, our team uses sophisticated diagnostic cardiac testing to determine whether you have the condition. We use the latest technology, including 3D and 4D echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography (CT) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to pinpoint your exact diagnosis. These next-generation imaging tools allow us to create more personalized and effective treatment plans.

How is heart failure treated at Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute?

When treating heart failure, our goal is to keep you out of the hospital and as active as possible. A wide variety of treatment options for heart failure is available. These may include:

  • Medical therapy, including oral medicines and injectables

What does "heart failure" mean?

The condition known as “heart failure” is misunderstood and often under-diagnosed. Much of the confusion comes from the name. Heart failure does not mean the heart stops. It means the heart is too weak to pump blood through the body as it normally should. The heart keeps working, but the body’s need for blood and oxygen isn’t being met.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heart Failure Treatment

  • During the heart failure clinic, you meet with a nurse who runs diagnostic tests, such as blood tests and X-rays, to see how you are recovering after treatment. Based on this checkup, your care team optimizes your heart failure treatment plan so it works as well as possible. You are welcome to return to the clinic routinely for checkups and treatment assessment.

  • Many heart failure patients return to the hospital with relapse shortly after initial treatment, usually within 30 days of discharge. Unfortunately, every time patients revisit the hospital, they are more at risk for getting sicker. The heart failure clinic helps check on your recovery and optimize treatment so you can avoid going back to the hospital.

Heart Failure Clinical Trials

Our team is involved with several studies to improve treatment and outcomes for heart failure patients. We’re helping to research new surgeries and medical therapies. If you are interested in learning more about clinical trials talk with your doctor or view a list of trials.
